Projects
EWB-NEU has been working in the Yoro district of Honduras since August 2005. In this time they have built a strong relationship with Americans Caring Teaching and Sharing, as well as the communities of El Tecuan, Los Planes and El Rosario. The Map below was drawn by one of the local guides ACTS and EWB-NEU works with while in the area.

Map of the area in Honduras we are working in. Carrizalito ACTS has their clinic in El Rosario. Click to learn more about the project EWB-Yale is doing to help this village. EWB-NEU just completed a project to improve El Tecuan's water distribution system. EWB-NEU hopes bring water to the people of Los Planes SHI EWB-Lafayette has been working in La Gunito

El Tecuan: EWB-NEU implemented their first project in this village. This project improved the reliability of water service and increased the pressure to many houses along the east line. Although the pressures throughout the village have improved the distribution system is still in need of repair. It is over 20 years old and sediment has built up along the pipes. Part of El Tecuan's supply line was damaged by Hurricane Mitch. It has been repaired to some degree, but still has considerable leaks and would not be able to withstand another strong storm. EWB-NEU is in contact with the people of El Tecuan and checks in on progress in the village on each trip to the area.

Los Planes: In April 2006 EWB-NEU conducted a site assessment of Los Planes. This village is in dire need of help. Currently they do not have a working water system. The women and children must walk 15 minutes with buckets to retrieve water from streams, many of which are contaminated with e-Coli. The villagers cannot easily farm or raise animals because there is no water. This lack of food and water is a major factor in the plethora of health problems in the community where the life expectancy is only in the 40s.

El Rosario: The non-profit group Americans Caring Teaching and Sharing (ACTS) has been working out of El Rosario for over 20 years. Mainly composed of doctors, ACTS visits multiple times a year. In this time they have built a clinic and bunk house in El Rosario.
EWB-Yale has also been working with this village to help improve their water distribution system.

La Habana: Sustainable Harvest International is located in La Habana. SHI works with the local communities to implement sustainable land-use practices that alleviate poverty by restoring ecological stability

Carrizalito: While EWB-NEU was in Honduras ACTS brought the group to Carrizalito. This village is situated high in the hills, with no roads connecting it to the rest of the area. It takes a little over an hour to hike there from El Rosario. Carrizalito also does not have a water distribution system. The villages go to their source to do laundry and gather water for the day. Slightly above this is an area--usually surrounded by animals--where people bathe.
ACTS also introduced us to Carlos. Carlos contracted Polio as a child and can no longer use his legs. ACTS hopes to find a way for him to be a more integral part of society.

La Gunito: EWB-Lafayette has a multi-phase project in La Gunito to help bring clean potable water to indigenous people that have been dying due to water-borne diseases. After this project EWB-Lafayette may work in El Convento, which is seen in the center of this map.
