Project Summary
The mission of the project is to allow the village of Bbanda to have access to an adequate supply of clean water in order to improve the health and overall quality of life of its 1500 citizens. Currently, the village of Bbanda gets its water from various open wells and boreholes around town, in addition to some basic, home-level rainwater catchment. Water from most of these sources is probably not safe to drink. There is currently no water distribution system, and the villagers are forced to carry large containers of water back to the village, posing a great burden on everyday life. The fact that the water must be boiled is also a burden to the villagers, and often times they end up skipping this vital purification process and drinking the water as is. In addition, AIDS and malaria are prevalent throughout the village. The lack of adequate supplies of clean water worsens the condition of the people affected by these diseases. Currently, there are a few options for providing clean water to the village, including another borehole or a rainwater catchment system. EWB-NEU will be able to determine which option is best once an initial assessment of the village is completed.
